Annual Health Exams and Vaccinations

Annually, or twice yearly if over the age of seven, your pet will receive a complete and thorough physical examination at Pinehurst Animal Hospital. All body systems are checked from head to paw. Every animal will receive an ear, eye, and skin exam, oral cavity check, and a thoracic exam, which involves listening to the heart and lungs. Once yearly appropriate lab work will be performed for your pet, such as heartworm testing and wellness bloodwork for dogs and intestinal parasite testing for dogs and cats. In senior patients, we recommend annual senior wellness lab work, which may allow us to diagnose a potential problem early before clinical signs occur.

For dogs, a Rabies vaccination is given every three years after the age of two and a Distemper combination vaccination is given yearly to protect your pet against serious infections, such as leptospirosis, adenovirus, distemper virus and parvovirus. Bordetella Bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough) is given intra-nasally once yearly This vaccine is an important one especially if your pet goes to the groomer, dog parks or has a visit to our boarding resort.

Cats will receive Rabies vaccine every 3 years after the age of two and FVRCP vaccinations on a yearly basis.  We also recommend Feline Leukemia and feline AIDS testing on all new cats as well as Feline Leukemia vaccination for outdoor cats.

The vaccinations discussed above are considered core vaccines. Other vaccinations are available to your pet and we would be happy to discuss your pet’s lifestyle and decide if they would benefit from other vaccinations.

**Annual Diagnostic Tests:CBC and Chemistry Panel
This blood work allows us to evaluate your pet’s internal health. Early detection provides the best treatment options for recovery. One in ten outwardly healthy pets have hidden disease revealed with diagnostic testing.

Dental Examination – Every year your pet’s oral health will be evaluated. Dental cleanings are necessary to prevent gum erosion, tooth decay, and even bone loss. The bacteria found in an unhealthy mouth have access to the pet’s bloodstream and can adversely affect vital organs like the heart and kidneys. Dental Health products are recommended.

Intestinal parasite testing is performed every 6 months in order to detect infestation.

Heartworm prevention: Heartworms are a preventable fatal disease. Prevention should be given every month for the pet’s entire life whether indoors or outdoors. We carry Heartgard plus. This product prevents heartworms, and controls intestinal parasites.

Flea Control: We carry Nexgard and Bravecto. Nexgard is given by mouth once monthly to prevent/treat fleas and ticks. Bravecto is given by mouth once every 3 months to prevent/treat fleas and ticks. No more need for topical products.  Nexgard and Bravecto acts fast – They start killing fleas within 3 hours, and ticks within 8 hours. We also carry Seresto collars as an alternative to an oral product. These collars prevent fleas and ticks for 6-8 months.

Heartworm and flea Prevention: Prevention should be applied topically once a month with Advantage Multi or every 3 months with Bravecto, for your pet's life. Prevention should be given whether your pet is 100% indoors or not.Indoor cats are still very likely to get heartworms and fleas. Prevention is best!Heartworms are a preventable, fatal disease. Advantage Multi is a liquid applied topically to the skin which not only prevents heartworm infection (for which there is no treatment in cats), but also treats/prevents: ear mites, fleas, sarcoptic mange, and intestinal hookworms and roundworms.
